- Try getting Azura's star, it works like a never-breaking grand (or black) soul gem. Playing Skyrim for the very first time (i know it sounds embarrassing lol) though I've been on this subreddit for a while now but never really got the opportunity to play the game itself. Just sharing i guess people wouldn't care much but i'm very happy.
- Soul Gems are naturally-occurring magic stones that house the souls of the dead. Used for enchanting weapons and armor at an arcane enchanter or for recharging previously enchanted weapons, soul gems come in various sizes and strengths: petty, lesser, common, greater, grand and black. Capturing souls in soul gems is typically done with the Soul Trap spell of the Conjuration school of Magicka.
Soul Gems are miscellaneous items which can be used to trap the souls of dying creatures or NPCs. The resulting filled soul gems can be used as power sources for enchanted items, either when initially creating custom enchanted items or when recharging depleted enchanted weapons. Soul gems come in a range of capacities, from petty to grand, plus some special soul gems. Only black soul gems and the Black Star can be used to capture the soul of an NPC, which is always a grand soul in size. There are also soul gem fragments found in the game. These are classified as minor loot and are not actual soul gems.
Empty soul gems can also be harvested from geode veins, which are only found in Blackreach. Each mined vein will result in 2–3 soul gems of any size, including black soul gems. The mined soul gems are level-dependent; at level 16 grand and black soul gems will start to appear, and the probability for either will max out at level 31.
- 1Types of Soul Gem
Sorry but this is all incorrect, on skyrim when you pick a grand level soul gem it dont change the charges available, as to a petty soul gem, before selecting a soul gem u have a slider that seems to have a predetermined amount of charges/power a weapon can have, you can sacrifice power for charges or visa versa, but the only thing that changes.

Common Soul Gem | none | 0002e4e6 | 0.3 | 50 | 1000 (Common) | 1250 | Middle size of soul gems. |
Common | 0002e4f3 | 150 | |||||

Grand Soul Gem | none | 0002e4fc | 0.5 | 200 | 3000 (Grand) | 6200 (caps at 3000) | Largest standard size of soul gems. Notes[edit]
- To use a soul gem to recharge a weapon, first select the weapon in your inventory and then:
- press the Wait key, which is T by default
- press R2
- press RB
- press R
- A small menu will open where the description ordinarily is, and you can choose a soul gem to use.
- Soul gems are consumed upon being used to recharge a weapon. This is one reason why it is a good idea to fill your soul gems as efficiently as possible (i.e., grand soul gems for grand souls, common soul gems for common souls, etc.). A soul gem not being used to its fullest capacity could be considered a waste (losing a grand soul gem because you used the petty soul contained within to recharge a weapon, for example). However, you can simply drop a filled gem to empty it (note that this will empty all self-filled gems (see bugs)).
- Standard merchants do not sell black soul gems. To purchase one you must talk to either Enthir at the College of Winterhold while he is in his quarters, or Falion in Morthal.
- You will obtain a Warped Soul Gem during the quest Arniel's Endeavor; however, it cannot be used to trap souls.
- If you have the Dawnguard add-on installed, grand or greater soul gems can be transformed into black soul gems by using the Lightning Attractor found in the Soul Cairn.
- If you have the Dragonborn add-on installed, you can combine any soul gem (empty or filled) with an albino spider pod at the imbuing chamber in White Ridge Barrow to create a mind control spider.
- If you have Saints and SeducersCC installed, Soul Tomatoes function as Grand Soul Gems. They previously appeared in the Shivering Isles expansion for Oblivion.
Bugs[edit]
- Soul gems that you filled yourself, with the exception of grand and black, do not change in value when fully filled (i.e., a common soul gem (valued at 50 when empty), will not increase in value with a soul in it, even though a prefilled common soul gem is valued at 150). This also causes them to not stack properly in your inventory.
- Soul gems that you filled yourself may be emptied if dropped, or transferred to a follower or container.
- This issue has been addressed by version 1.0 of the Unofficial Skyrim Patch; only partially filled soul gems will be emptied, in order to allow you to fix any errors in filling them.
- Wylandriah's soul gem is fillable and can be used to recharge enchanted weapons, despite being a quest item. Consuming the gem through recharging enchanted weapons or enchanting items.
- This bug is fixed by version 1.0 of the Unofficial Skyrim Patch.
Every soul in Oblivion is one of six possible strengths: Petty, Lesser, Common, Greater, Grand, and Black. More powerful creatures have more powerful souls. Souls are trapped in soul gems by using a soul trap spell. Trapped souls are used to enchant and recharge items.
Souls Alphabetically[edit]
This table provides soul strengths for most of the standard creatures in Oblivion. Unique creatures (like the lich Lorgren Benirus) generally have leveled souls that are not in this table. See individual creature pages for full details on their souls.
Souls with a superscript (e.g., L:-1) are leveled; see the later section for details. In a few cases (Ogres, Sanctified Spectre) there are several different versions of the creature sharing the same name but having different souls; see those creatures' pages for details.

Souls by Strength[edit]
These lists only include creatures with fixed soul strengths.
Soul type | Value | Creatures |
---|---|---|
Petty | 150 | Deer, Dog, Goblin, Mudcrab, Rat, Sheep, Skeleton, Slaughterfish, Stunted Scamp, Wolf |
Lesser | 300 | Boar, Clannfear Runt, Goblin Skirmisher, Horse, Scamp, Skeleton Guardian, Timber Wolf, Troll, Zombie |
Common | 800 | Ancient Ghost, Black Bear, Clannfear, Faded Wraith, Flame Atronach, Goblin Berserker, Headless Zombie, Minotaur, Mountain Lion, Skeleton Hero, Spriggan, Will-o-the-Wisp |
Greater | 1200 | Brown Bear, Daedroth, Dread Zombie, Frost Atronach, Land Dreugh, Skeleton Champion, Spider Daedra, Storm Atronach, Wraith |
Grand | 1600 | Gloom Wraith, Lich, Minotaur Lord, Xivilai |
Black | 1600 | Humanoids (the ten races of Tamriel), Vampires and Dremora are all considered NPCs. |
NPC souls, as listed above, can only be trapped in black soul gems. This practice is considered akin to necromancy in the Mages Guild questline, and can also be ethically questionable in the roleplaying sense.
Black-soul trapping, however, is one of the only ways to acquire Grand-soul values for enchanting before level 20.
Soul Strengths[edit]
Skyrim Soul Gem Levels
There are six possible soul strengths:
Soul Level | Soul Strength |
---|---|
Petty | 150 |
Lesser | 300 |
Common | 800 |
Greater | 1200 |
Grand | 1600 |
Black | 1600 |
A creature's soul strength is determined in one of two ways.
- Most standard creatures have fixed souls. For example, every Flame Atronach will have a common soul, regardless of location or player character's level.
- Most unique creatures and some other creatures have a soul strength based upon the player character's level--either the PC's level or an offset of the PC's level.
Offsets as low as -10 and as high as +10 exist, but the table below illustrates some common offsets:
Soul level | L:-3 | L:-2 | L:-1 | Baseline L:+0 | L:+1 | L:+2 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Petty | 1-4 | 1-3 | 1-2 | 1 | ||
Lesser | 5-9 | 4-8 | 3-7 | 2-6 | 1-5 | 1-4 |
Common | 10-15 | 9-14 | 8-13 | 7-12 | 6-11 | 5-10 |
Greater | 16-20 | 15-19 | 14-18 | 13-17 | 12-16 | 11-15 |
Grand | 21+ | 20+ | 19+ | 18+ | 17+ | 16+ |
Examples:
- When the PC is level 4, a Bloody Hand Rat Farmer (offset L:-3) will have a petty soul and all other Bloody Hand goblins (offsets L:-1 to L:+2) will have lesser souls.
- When the PC is level 5, a Bloody Hand Goblin War Chief (offset L:+2) will have a common soul and all other Bloody Hand goblins (offsets L:-3 to L:+1) will have lesser souls.
Skyrim Filled Black Soul Gem
An additional complication is that some creatures have a minimum or maximum level that also caps their soul.
For Instance:
- Ghosts have a maximum level of 4--their souls will be at most lesser strength. With an offset of L:-1, ghosts will have petty souls until PC level 3 and lesser souls at PC level 4 and above. This is summarized in the chart by '<=LesserL:-1'.
- Ogres have a minimum level of 16--their souls will be at least greater strength. With an offset of L:-3, ogres will have a greater soul until PC level 21 when their souls will be grand. This is summarized in the chart by '>=GreaterL:-3'
Creatures with no maximum or minimum soul level (any soul strength is possible) are stated with 'leveled' followed by a superscript providing the offset.
