William Hendriksen (18 November 1900 – 12 January 1982) was a New Testament scholar and writer of Bible commentaries. He was born in Tiel, Gelderland, but his family moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1911. Hendriksen studied at Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary before obtaining an S.T.D. degree from Pike's Peak Bible Seminary, as was common for on-the-job pastors seeking doctorates in the 1930s and 1940s. It is there that he wrote the thesis More than Conquerors. This book has never gone off the market since it was then privately printed and Herman Baker issued it as the first publication of the new Baker Book House in 1940. He received a Th.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary.[1]

In William Hendriksen’s firm possession of a triumphant biblical faith. The fuller rendering of the apostle’s victory cry in Romans 8—“We are more than conquerors through him who loved us”—reverberated in William Hendriksen’s tenacious labors to interpret God’s Word with clear, rich, and irenic exposition.
Hendriksen was an ordained minister in the Christian Reformed Church and served as Professor of New Testament at Calvin Theological Seminary from 1942 to 1952. He started the New Testament Commentary, completing commentaries on more than half of the New Testament books. This series was published by Baker and completed by Simon Kistemaker after Hendriksen's death. Hendriksen was awarded a posthumous Gold Medallion Book Award for his commentary on Romans.[2] He also translated the Book of Revelation for the New International Version.[3] His granddaughter Dawn Wolthuis now serves as President of the Institute for Christian Studies.
In his influential work Israel and Prophecy, written a year after the 1967 war, and still in print, Hendriksen criticized the view, held by dispensationalists and Christian Zionists, that the Bible prophesies the return and restoration of the Jews to the land of Israel.[4] Dispensationalist pastor Barry Horner describes Hendriksen's work as 'a classic representation of replacement theology'.[5]
Hendriksen has been described as 'one of the leading and most respected of New Testament commentators.'[6]

It presents a lot of useful information. Jan 05, James rated it it was amazing. It’s willlan enough for the average study of Revelation, but it’s technical enough to really get into and come away with an understanding of Revelation.
I guess I like my eschatology a little more, shall we say, pronounced. I found More Than Conquerors both boring and tedious.

I think I understand now why many in the Reformed camp are accused of “spiritualizing” many portions of scripture. As a writer, I appreciate how he sees the literary craftsmanship of the Bible and considers that throughout the work. There were two major apparent contradictions in the book.
I am personally not convinced of all of his interpretations, but I am greatly encouraged by his overall handling of the book and his presentation of the hope that the church can cling to while living in a hostile world. The only shortcoming for me in his study of the Revelation is what Hendrikksen feel to be an oversimplification here and there that may have led him to a “partially” wrong conclusion. I think we need this kind of books more today than ever before.
Brought to the stadium, the proconsul urged him, saying, ‘Swear, and I will set thee at liberty, reproach Christ.
Hendriksen writes from an amillennial view, believing that the thousand year reign of Christ in Revelation 20 is figurative of the progress of the church during the present church age. WorldCat is the world’s largest library catalog, helping you find library materials online.
The analysis of the book is full of important historical detail as well as biblical exegesis. My only complaint is that it took pages to get to these five beautiful pages before quickly reverting back to making sure that no one accidentally dillian anything but the dispensation of the church in the Book of Revelation.
